VoageHouston.com Interview of Brooke Young, Winter 2017.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Young.
Brooke, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
15 years of working in the beauty industry afforded me the opportunity to work for retail giants. My daily routine was to make women- and men- look and feel they’re very best. My skills as a runway, print and TV makeup artist in New York City gave me much joy and was heightened one day while working for Sephora. While stocking the shelves in their skincare department several clients walked up to me and asked for cruelty-free products. At the time there were only two items out of a multimillion-dollar sales floor available! That was my aha moment. I knew then that the beauty industry needed more cruelty-free options. It took a few years after that for me to develop my company OshunRa Vegan Beauty.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a single mom, the journey of becoming an entrepreneur is rewarding. The challenge for me was building a brand on one income. But knowing that I am setting an example for my children while encouraging people to experience the benefits of Vegan beauty products brings me tremendous joy.
Please tell us about OshunRa Vegan Beauty.
What sets OshunRa Vegan Beauty apart from its competition is that I am known for creating multiple vegan lines for the entire family. Be it the FRO line for natural hair or Scrubbed for millennials seeking fun bath products- OshunRa specializes in using safe and effective ingredients. I am most proud of designing complete product lines available for retail and wholesale opportunities.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would definitely take more breaths. Trusting in your own vision is the number one key to success. Sometimes startup owners are in such a hurry to prove their valuation that they never stop to enjoy the process.
